The Noctunea User Guide

This guide walks you through everything Noctunea can do — from playing your first sound to building, saving and timing your own ambient soundscapes for focus, sleep and relaxation.

How to use Noctunea

1

Getting started

Open Noctunea in your browser and click Start Listening. No sign-up is needed and there is nothing to install. The app remembers your last session so your soundscape is waiting for you next time.

2

Mixing sounds

On the Home and Mixer tabs, browse sounds by category (Noise, Water, Forest, Urban). Tap a sound to activate it and set its level. The real power is in layering: combine three or four sounds, then balance them so one sits in the foreground.

3

Using scenes

Head to the Scenes tab to discover pre-made combinations — from "Irish Cliff" to "Deep Focus". Tap a scene to load a curated mix, then tweak any slider to make it yours. Scenes are the fastest way to find a sound you like.

4

Sleep timer

Open the Timer tab to schedule an auto-stop. Choose a preset duration or set a custom time. When the timer ends, your sounds fade out gently rather than cutting off abruptly — ideal for falling asleep.

5

Saving custom mixes

Built a blend you want to keep? In the Mixer tab tap Save Mix and name it. Saved mixes live in My Mixes. Log in with a free account to sync them across your phone, tablet and computer.

Brown, pink and white noise — which to use

Noctunea generates all three coloured noises in real time.

Brown noise

Deep and warm, with the energy weighted toward low frequencies. Great for blocking out speech and traffic, and a favourite for focus and sleep.

Pink noise

Balanced and natural, like steady rainfall or wind. Many people find it the most soothing for relaxing and drifting off.

White noise

Bright and full-spectrum, like static. Effective at masking sudden noises and helping with concentration.

FAQ

Keep your base sound a little lower than you think — it is easy to fatigue your ears. For focus, lean on brown noise or rain and keep melodic or speech-like sounds (café, birds) quiet. For sleep, avoid sudden sounds; favour steady rain, pink noise and a low fan.
